The flea and tick season will soon be in full force. My friend that I am staying with while my life is in transit uses the "smelly stuff" that is a chemical, I will not mention the name......that is advertised widely...........
I always wonder when something that I put on the skin of my dog is SUPPOSED to migrate to its bloodstream........
I on the other hand am suspicious of such man made chemicals. And I use another kind of "smelly stuff" that is "natural" ?? (one can always question this, too) ....and very very stinky, smelling strongly of citronella ...but every other day I rub it into the heads of my black furry friends.
they slobber and goober and affectionately sling their slime on me while I do this so even if there is no benefit resulting in dead bugs, there is always the joy of the moment..........
we shall see......
if I find too many of the little ticks I shall have to switch to even stronger remedies such as diatom dust rubbed into the fur...but I shall refrain for awhile . I still will stay away as long as I can from the widely advertised "stuff" that costs a fortune and builds new labratories for the pharmaceutical industries.
OH! You ask "what is Diatom Dust?" Well, it is a MIRACLE powder that is completely non toxic, you or your dog could eat it, if you want. It is a fine, white, talcum-like powder. It lasts forever, unless you vacuum it up, and when bugs walk through it, THEY DIE! That is because it is made up of the natural crystal materials found in diotomaceous earth, yes EARTH, and the little crystals are too sharp for the bug's skin (exoskeletons) ..whatever....anyway, it does work and will eventually rid any area of bugs! Caution is prudent , this will damage the lungs of birds so don't get too free with the "dust" that will fly up from this stuff.....WHERE TO GET IT: any lawn/garden store is a good place to start.
The other product that I swear by is called : YOUR BASIC FLEA COLLAR. Don't laugh. they work. Haven't had a flea for two summers now on my dogs. And, remember, I go out in the woods and all kiinds of yukky places with my dogs because I train them for Search and Rescue. I do also keep on hand a handy dandy can of pump style flea spray, the kind you can use daily, on puppies. I use that as an "extra" when I am going to be out camping in the woods for a weekend....to guard against ticks.
